RECORD SNOWS SLOW TO MELT OFF UPPER SLOPES AT SNOWMASS
La Sportiva Trail Race Trifecta cancelled, chairlift opening delayed
Snowmass Village, CO - With a record 450 inches of snow this winter on Snowmass and cool spring temperatures, mother nature has not cooperated in drying off the upper slopes of Snowmass. As a result, Snowmass Village officials today made the decision to cancel the June 14-15 La Sportiva Trail Race Trifecta which was expected to use trails high up the mountain. Additionally, the Burlingame chairlift, which had been expected to open June 6, has been delayed in opening until the weekend of June 14.
"Unfortunately the spectacular winter has summer consequences, and there's just too much snow up there right now," says Events Manager Dave Elkan. "We couldn't safely clear some of the higher trails of snow and debris in time for the race, and racer safety is our number one concern."
The next event in the Snowmass Village summer schedule, the Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned Snowmassive Disc Golf Open (June 20-22), has been pared down to 36 holes from the original 54 but will go on as planned. The event hosts three days of disc-golf competitions for cash and prizes.
Festival-goers to Snowmass Village's first event of the summer season, the 5th annual Snowmass Chili Pepper & Brew Fest (June 6-8), need not worry about snow and soggy seating. While the upper slopes on Snowmass have been slow to melt, the conditions on Fanny Hill at the site of the upcoming festival are spectacular and dry due to early season plowing and a new drainage system on the hill.
